Building services jobs 'generated by new funding'
13 January 2010
A new funding initiative to increase the number of council homes available to low-income families could require building services specialists.
Those looking for jobs in the sector could be contracted by local authorities receiving a share of £122.6 million of government money, which has been earmarked to help 73 councils across the UK create more than 4,000 new homes for 8,000 people.
Announcing the scheme, housing minister John Healey added that all bodies receiving money will be required to set up apprenticeship and job schemes, offering 7,500 new positions and over 100 training courses.
"Councils have shown they're ready and willing to build new homes, so I'm ready to back them. This year's government spending for affordable housing will be the largest for at least two decades," Mr Healey explained.
Work on the project got underway in Tyneside at the beginning of the month, with the minister present to see those in building services jobs starting to dig the first foundations.
