VAT cuts to boost construction sales jobs?
24 February 2010
Construction sales jobs seekers may benefit from suggestions to cut VAT to just five per cent on certain elements of labour.
Alex Hawkes, news editor at Construction News, noted that any decrease would be good news for legitimate builders, as it would reduce the amount they would have to pay.
He remarked that repair and refurbishment projects are likely to be popular this year as both the government and private rented sector seem to be favouring the less expensive option.
"It [the government] certainly needs to think about what it is doing with its infrastructure plans because they are the first things that get cut," Mr Hawkes said.
The Cut the VAT coalition recently announced that around 55,000 jobs could be saved if those in power reduced the tax to five per cent on maintenance and improvement works for residential properties - contributing £1.4 billion to the economy in 2010.
