Coal technology will 'create engineering jobs'
18 June 2009
Jobs in engineering sales may be created as part of a government drive to develop clean coal technology.
New research by the AEA Group has stated that the initiative could bring 30,000 to 60,000 careers in sectors such as manufacturing, engineering and procurement.
Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband said: "By acting early, jobs will
be created as Britain develops the expertise in what could be a major new industry."
According to the Future Value of Coal Carbon Abatement Technologies to UK Industry report, carbon capture and storage (CCS) implementation has the potential to bring up to £4 billion into the country annually by 2030.
The research will be published today in conjunction with a government document outlining the development of clean coal.
CCS, once proven, would be retroactively fitted to all new coal-using power stations within five years.
AEA Group provides a consultancy service to public bodies in their efforts to combat climate change and increase environmental awareness.
