Industrial engineering jobs to benefit from £19m investment?
15 December 2009
Industrial engineering jobs in the automotive sector are to be boosted by £19 million of government investment, Lord Mandelson has claimed.
The business secretary announced the funding at the first meeting of the Automotive Council, noting that the money is to go towards financing Britain's shift to low and ultra low-carbon vehicles.
He remarked: "The Government is committed to targeting areas where there is potential to build on existing capabilities and deliver global competitive advantage and economic benefit for the UK."
According to Lord Mandelson, the Automotive Council's ability to improve its supply chain and equipment using the funding will "be vital" in encouraging the production of sustainable vehicles.
The Technology Strategy Board, a government-supported body, will also be injecting £10 million in to the Low Carbon Vehicles Innovation Platform.
Earlier this month, chief executive officer of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply David Noble said the manufacturing sector is "slowly but surely" beginning to improve following the economic downturn.
