Industrial engineering jobs 'saved by new contract'
18 January 2010
Industrial engineering jobs seekers may be encouraged to hear that a new £865 million contract has been given to Rolls-Royce for the construction of jet engines.
The ten-year deal with the Ministry of Defence means that more than 3,000 highly-skilled employees will be sustained during the work.
Under the terms of the agreement, Rolls-Royce will be producing engines for the Royal Air Force's advanced fighter jet - the Typhoon.
Minister for defence equipment and support Quentin Davies said that it is "excellent news" for those in the industry.
"The Typhoon programme directly employs some 15,000 aerospace and engineering staff in some of the UK's leading companies and many more throughout the supply chain," he remarked.
According to Mr Davies, the arrangement is confirmation of the government's commitment to boosting industry while maintaining premium quality equipment for front-line troops.
The Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply's Purchasing Managers' Index for December recently posted its most significant increase for manufacturing in two years.
