Industrial exports 'to boost SMEs'
1 February 2010
Those searching for
jobs in engineering sales could be interested to learn that 27 per cent of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) recorded an increase in manufacturing production in the three months to January.
Improved exports were given as the reason behind the better-than-expected results - published in the Confederation of British Industry's quarterly SME Trends Survey -although 23 per cent of firms surveyed also reported a rise in domestic orders.
Russel Griggs, chairman of the CBI's SME Council, revealed that manufacturers are pinning their hopes on the weakness of the pound and so he stated they will be happy that exports have stabilised.
He added: "Small and medium-sized manufacturers are also expecting overseas orders to grow in the coming months and are the most upbeat about export prospects for fifteen years."
But the research found that companies are continuing to destock and the CBI recently remarked that the 0.1 per cent GDP rise out of recession was disappointing.
