Brown: UK to install smart grid

Prime minister Gordon Brown, in a letter to the chairman of the Liaison Committee Dr Alan Williams about the issue of sustainability, stated there would be a major expansion of renewable and nuclear energy.
Mr Brown noted that the global opportunities for growth in the green sector could be vast, adding: "By increasing energy efficiency in homes and businesses, by developing a new smart grid and decarbonising transport, the UK is on course to the 34 per cent reduction in emissions by 2020."
His comments follow a recent announcement by the Department of Energy and Climate Change that plans are to be introduced in April that will allow households and communities to claim back revenue from the low-carbon electricity they produce.
