How to conduct an interview

The job interview is your primary means to screen and select the right candidate for your business. It's vital that you conduct an interview in a structured and methodical way to ensure that you obtain all the necessary information you need to make an informed decision on the right person.

At the end of the day, how to conduct an interview is often down to personal style and company policy but we've pulled together some useful suggestions below:

  • Ensure that you are not disturbed – find a private and quiet room to conduct the interview and ensure mobile phones are switched off! On Target Recruitment can offer you excellent interview facilities at our office, completely free of charge
  • Ask the following questions: Achievements / Reasons for leaving / What the candidate is looking for in their next job / What does their current/previous jobs involve / What do they feel they have to offer you  / What do they know about your company.
  • Be prepared to sell your company and job to the candidate. This is a two-way process.
  • Allow the candidate the opportunity to ask questions
  • Provide detailed feedback on the interview to On Target Recruitment
  • If you want to invite them to a second interview inform On Target Recruitment and make it clear what will be expected of the candidate.

Laura, I really wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for your knowledge and understanding with regard to the candidates you are sending to me. Without question they fit the key competencies I discussed with you which is a real credit to your fact finding and the grilling you gave me before we embarked on this partnership. Thanks once again.
